Having owned a fair few Troy Lee Designs helmets over the years including their first open face trail helmet the A1. We are super excited to get our hands on the latest product the A2.

The A1 carried Troy Lee’s great styling and multiple colour ways from their years of domination of the full face helmet market ensuring something for everyone. So the styling was on point, however the A1 did run a little on the hot side even for us riders here in the UK.

Thankfully Troy Lee Designs have addressed this and we have seen no such problems with this all new A2. It features air vents that are now 25 per cent larger than before on the A1.

Troy Lee Designs haven’t rested on their laurels and the new features don’t stop with improved ventilation. The A2 features Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) liner. MIPS is designed to significantly reduce the effect of rotational force to the brain caused by angled impacts. This revolutionary technology lets the helmet slide relative to the head. The liner features X-Static Pure Silver pads to reduce odour from them hot and sweaty days in the saddle and boasts quick drying, moisture wicking properties.

The shell sports a dual density foam construction. EPS for high-speed impacts and EPP for slow speed impacts this means a denser material around the most vulnerable areas in the impact zones. This is the first helmet in its class to combine both types of foam in a sleek package which TLD claim has raised the bar and set a new benchmark for mountain bike helmets.

The A2 has the perfect length peak and a great shape and limited adjustment. It does have neat little anodised fixing bolts designed to shear and break away in a crash. I found the helmet worked great with various makes and models of goggles and glasses but there is not enough space to lift and stash your goggles under the peak.

A small point looking back, I didn’t like the light coloured strapping on my previous A1. It showed the sweat and became stained after the first wet and muddy ride. This particular A2 has a black strap meaning it should look newer for longer. This A2 helmet also comes with a handy helmet duffle bag to protect when it’s not on your head.

If you were a fan of the A1 and its secure snug fit you’ll love this new helmet too. Combine the reduced weight (A2 350g size M/L, A1 368g size M/L) and the great rear stabiliser fit system means it’s very comfortable package for long days in the saddle and different pads are supplied to create a great custom fit if required. The A2 is available in no less than ten different colour ways with two separate graphic designs. This should make perfecting your own personal fit and style easy.

Verdict

We certainly feel this helmet is more than worthy of the Troy Lee Designs name with impeccable style only found from TLD. But it’s not just a great looking piece of kit, they really have moved the game on in terms of features, performance and fit. Of course this all comes at a price, but boy is it worth it. The A2 is a top pick if you are in the market for a open face trail helmet.
